First A.M.E. Zion Church THE BEGINNING OF THE AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL ZION CHURCH
Those who are acquainted with the history of Methodism in this country it is generally conceded that its light first shone forth in the City of New York about the year 1765. The John Street Church was the first Methodist Church erected in that city. There were several colored members in this Church from its first organization. Between the years 1765 and 1796 the number of colored members largely increased, so much so that caste prejudice forbade their taking the Sacrament until the white families were all served. This, and the desire for other Church privileges denied them, induced them to organize themselves, which they did in the year 1796. This was the first African Methodist Church of which we have any account. The Church was legally incorporated on March 9, 1801, and the name Zion was added to our title at the General Conference of 1848. |
